Slippery Slope Farm
Gowanus . Brooklyn, NY
A Rooftop Micro-Farm
Slippery Slope Farm is a modern sub-irrigated Brooklyn rooftop micro-farm. It is an evolving case study of primarily sub-irrigation and nutrient density sustainable practices in growing the most nutritious and healthy food. These systems are complemented by a composed use of edible vegetable and fruit plant selections as ornamental. The purple/ chartreuse garden beds have varieties of purple and green tomatoes, vining purple and green Asian long beans, and hyacinth beans, burgundy okra, purple and Thai basils, angelica, echinacea, eggplants, kiwi, amaranth and curiosities such as Clitorea. Maximizing harvest production is integrated with a design aethestic essential in limited multi-use urban living spaces. Slippery Slope Farm interplays with outdoor living, dining, playing, rooftop movie viewing and star gazing. There is an emphasis on edible flowers and companion plantings where good bed fellows usually taste best together on the plate. Over a dozen varieties of tomatoes are grown with basil, Italian parsley, borage and marigolds. Currently Slippery Slope Farms harvests and inspires daily meals from May through December.
